Mattel Recalls More Toys

For a second time in two weeks, toymaker Mattel has issued another recall.

Earlier this month, Mattel's Fisher-Price division recalled more than a million pre-school toys featuring such characters as Big Bird and Elmo. Tuesday’s recall includes Polly Pocket, Barbie and her dog Tanner, which contain powerful magnets that are harmful if swallowed.

“I have a baby that chews on everything,” said Sarah Prenedez. The young mother of three has some of the recalled toys in her home.

The recall also includes die-cast cars from the popular Disney movie “Cars” and says the toys are covered in lead paint. Health officials warn exposure to lead paint can cause neurological and developmental problems in children.

“We have no early warning signs for a child with low level of lead exposure. We found any level of lead exposure of lead in a child can cause toxic injury,” said pediatrician Dr. Leo Transande.

He said if parents believe their child has come into contact with lead paint to contact their pediatrician for a blood test.

To find out if a toy in your home is on Mattel’s recall list you can log on to their Web site at www.mattel.com.
