More Californians E-Filing Taxes

California taxpayers turned to technology throughout the 2000-filing season, resulting in record participation in e-file and direct deposit refund programs, according to the California Franchise Tax Board.

The e-file program, now in its fifth year, reached a milestone by surpassing the 2 million mark for the first time with 2.2 million e-file returns as of May 5. That's an increase of 54 percent from the same period last year.

While the majority of e-filing is submitted by professionals, last year, the number of taxpayers that filed online more than doubled.

You can file your tax return from home, a school or a library using a personal computer, appropriate software and an On-Line Filing Service Provider that has successfully completed California?s Participants Acceptance Testing System including, CompleteTax, FileYourTaxes.com, preptax, TaxACT, TaxCut, TurboTax and weavertaxser.

Online filing allows taxpayers direct deposit of their refund within 7-10 days, or it allows them to pay taxes with e-pay.

Some e-filers may be eligible to file for free. Check to see if you can save money.
